The Foundation Year, if taken as part of the 4 year degree, is designed for candidates just starting in their musical journeys, ideally with a couple of tracks, events or relevant qualifications under their belt. Core modules in academic skills and an introduction to music technology and copyright law will ensure you are ready to continue your studies at Level 4 and throughout the rest of the degree. This is a good level to try out optional modules in performance, recording, music theory or music marketing and find the right fit for you.
LCCM’s new BA Commercial Music degree provides a comprehensive but customisable award for Commercial Music students with optional pathways suited to solo vocalists and rappers, electronic and hip-hop producers, ambitious DIY artists, hands-on A&R or executive producers. The new degree combines the best knowledge and expertise from LCCM’s long running music performance & production degree combined with elements of music business and computer based recording techniques. In keeping with trends in the industry and marketplace there is less emphasis on music theory and original instrumentation. The programme brings together core and optional modules that are nearly all cross-programme with other degrees at LCCM enabling modern music makers to meet and collaborate with peers across the college.
Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to collaborate with your peers, students on other degrees at LCCM and the wider creative community. As you build a network of talented, creative and ambitious musicians and entrepreneurs, you will be given the opportunity and support to put what you are learning into practice in the real world. This will include periods of work-based learning within industry organisations or time spent immersed in an entrepreneurial project.
Being in the heart of London, we have close links to industry and have dedicated staff looking to match students with opportunities from our partners and industry network.
The LCCM student body is a highly creative community and we encourage students to network internally, creating events and activities themselves. The student committee organises student social and open events in our Music Box venue and performance rooms. We have many activities that occur throughout the year, including industry guest masterclasses for the whole college and weekly workshops such as Songwriting, Programming, Instrumental group lessons, Choir to open jams are offered to compliment your studies. These workshops also gives you the opportunity to experiment with new musical ideas, to improve your music skills and knowledge in a relaxed and informal setting.
We encourage students to attend industry networking events and conferences, especially those that happen in London. The Music Box venue regularly hosts gatherings with some of the most influential industry organisations including UK Music, the BPI, the Ivors Academy, the Student Radio Association/Student Music Network and the Featured Artists Coalition. We are an official venue for BBC Introducing Live in 2022.
