Offered at levels 4, 5 or 6, the Principal Instrument modules provide a structured approach to develop your advanced instrumental skills as a performer and creator of contemporary music. Expert tuition, including one to one, is available for guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, horns or voice, leading up to a public performance for level 6 students.
Aims of the module
This module aims to further students’ technical and artistic ability on one of the following principal instruments: Voice, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums.
Building on the skills developed at Level 4, this module aims to extend students’ technical and artistic ability on one of the following principal instruments: Voice, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums.
Building on the skills developed at Level 5, this module aims to challenge students’ technical and artistic ability on one of the following principal instruments: Voice, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums. Students completing this module are expected to perform at professional standards.

What Will I Experience?
This course is designed to give you a good grounding in all aspects of the music industry. Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards or Vocals. You will develop your technical skills on your chosen instrument.
You will perform both your own music and covers at a music venue in a range of bands and ensembles.
Theory and Notation
You will develop essential skills including theory, ear training and working with notation.
you will explore the music business including the key roles, players and functions every music professional needs to understand.
Learn to produce your own music using Logic Pro.
Pre-requisites for taking the module
- A minimum of 3 years playing experience at level 4.
- A Knowledge of a variety of styles on their chosen instrument.
- The ability to learn by ear in a group situation
- To be able to improvise specific instrumental parts
- Ideally some basic sight-reading, but advanced reading skills are not essential, particularly at level 4.
- NB: The same points apply to all students whatever level they wish to enter the Principal Instrument module at, obviously for those wishing to enter the module at levels 5 and 6 more experience would be required. Students would also need to have a more advanced harmonic and rhythmic understanding for levels 5 and 6.
