The BMus (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering course focuses on the creation, development and delivery of commercial audio. As audio creators we are reliant on technologies which afford us many creative careers. The course encourages you to explore these technologies and their contextual practice, understanding their history and relevance to future associated industries. Areas of study include basic to advanced recording, mixing, mastering techniques in both analogue and digital landscapes and spatial audio experiences for emerging technologies. Modules are designed to integrate skills, knowledge and understanding of commercial music industries and their future development.

The course is very practical with an emphasis on portfolio creation; however, students are required to engage in academic writing for assessments. In general assessment weightings are 70% portfolio and 30% essay/assessments. All modules are compulsory.

What will you learn?

You will gain an in depth understanding of music and audio creation as well as its consumption by society. From audio conception, creation, capture, its manipulation and final delivery to the consumer, you’ll learn and explore audio synthesis, digital and analogue recording practices, advanced microphone and mixing techniques, audio mastering and composition for media platforms. Students will gain valuable insight from industry professionals on how to thrive in today’s industry landscapes. The course encourages collaboration and cross pollination with other pathways giving each student the opportunity to work alongside peers from other specialist areas of study.

This course is aimed at aspiring music producers and audio engineers looking to develop industry skills and in-depth research in contemporary practices within the music and audio industry.

Extra-curricular activities

The LCCM student body is a highly creative community and we encourage students to network internally, creating events and activities themselves. The student committee organise student social and open events in our venue and performance rooms. We have many enhancement activities that occur throughout the year, including industry guest masterclasses for the whole college and weekly open workshops to improve your music skills and knowledge in a relaxed and informal setting. We encourage students to attend industry networking events and conferences, especially those that happen in London. The Music Box venue regularly hosts gatherings with some of the most influential industry organisations including UK Music, the BPI, the Ivors Academy, the Radio Academy, the Featured Artist Coalition. We are an official venue for BBC Introducing Live in 2022.
